The people of Tekelifuta in Goroimari, South Kamrup have come together to construct a bamboo bridge entirely with public donations. The bridge, aimed at easing transportation difficulties for local residents, has been named ‘Zubeen Garg Setu’ in honour of Assam’s beloved singer Zubeen Garg.
For decades, residents of Kamalapur, Tekelifuta and Bejursuti faced serious difficulties due to the absence of proper transportation infrastructure. School students, daily commuters and villagers struggled to cross waterways, especially during the monsoon season, as no elected representative or Panchayat member took initiative to address the problem.
Determined to solve their long-standing challenge, the people pooled their resources and labor to build the bamboo bridge. Today, the bridge stands as a symbol of community solidarity, linking the three villages and providing safe and easy passage for everyone.
The bridge was officially inaugurated by Mehbub Ali, Vice-President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Kisan Morcha. The inauguration ceremony was attended by prominent local figures, including Nurul Islam, President of the Goroimari Regional Sports Association and Principal of Brahmaputra Valley Academy; former Goroimari Zilla Parishad member Sabel Uddin and Anwar Husein, President of the BJP Kamrup District Minority Morcha among others.
Speaking at the event, Mehbub Ali praised the villagers’ initiative, saying, “This bridge is a shining example of what people can achieve when they work together. Without waiting for government support, the residents have solved a problem that has existed for years.”
Nurul Islam also expressed admiration for the community effort. “The determination and unity of these villagers are commendable. They have not only built a bridge but also set an example for other regions on how collective action can bring real change,” he said.
