Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi launched a sharp political attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of creating repeated controversies while failing to deliver clear answers on key issues facing the state.
Speaking to the media, Gogoi said Congress leader Rejaul Karim Sarkar has already apologised for his recent remarks linked to the idea of “Bor Axom” and has been advised to be careful while addressing public gatherings in the future. Gogoi said Sarkar’s comments were intended to speak about unity and development but ended up hurting public sentiment, leading to resentment in several quarters.
Turning his focus to the Chief Minister, Gogoi criticised Sarma’s repeated claims that details of alleged links between Gogoi and Pakistan would be made public. “The Chief Minister announced this in September and kept repeating it for months. His cinema has now flopped,” Gogoi said, adding that the repeated delays showed the issue was being used only for political drama.
Gogoi also questioned why the Chief Minister has stopped speaking about the case related to popular singer Zubeen Garg, stating that lawyers involved in the case have expressed dissatisfaction with the SIT chargesheet. He claimed the chargesheet could allow some accused persons to seek bail instead of ensuring justice.
Raising further concerns, Gogoi sought clarity on other SIT probes, including the case of police officer Junmoni Rabha. He asked whether justice had been delivered to Rabha’s family and questioned the Chief Minister’s silence on the issue. Gogoi also criticised the lack of updates on the Umrangso coal mine tragedy, where several miners lost their lives.
Responding to allegations that Congress supports divisive politics, Gogoi said the party firmly believes in the idea of “Bor Axom” based on unity and harmony. He accused the Chief Minister of focusing more on benefiting private interests rather than addressing people’s concerns.
The controversy began after Sarkar’s remarks, allegedly interpreted as comparing Sivasagar and Tinsukia with Dhubri, triggered political reactions across Assam. Clarifying his stand, Sarkar said his comments were misinterpreted and apologised to anyone hurt, stressing that his vision of “Bor Axom” was about development, unity, and linking Upper and Lower Assam, including the Barak and Brahmaputra valleys.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarma hit back strongly, questioning Sarkar’s authority to speak on the development of Assam and rejecting his vision of “Bor Axom,” further intensifying the political face-off.
