A special meeting will be held today with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to discuss the recent unrest in West Karbi Anglong. The meeting, scheduled for this evening in Guwahati, will include Karbi representatives, the Karbi King, and leaders from different parties and organisations. The discussions are expected to focus on the ongoing tension in the Kheroni area.
The Chief Minister will also hold talks with representatives of the protestors opposing alleged encroachment on PGR and VGR land, along with the Chief Executive Member and members of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council. The talks aim to find a peaceful and lawful solution to the dispute.
The meeting comes after two days of serious violence in the area, during which two youths lost their lives and several houses and shops were burnt. The Army was deployed, and flag marches were carried out. Paramilitary forces and Assam Police commandos have also been stationed in the region to maintain order.
Speaking to the media, Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier had said the issue involves legal complications and urged everyone to avoid violence. He said that while peaceful protest is acceptable, problems cannot be solved through violent acts. The Chief Minister also explained that eviction from the disputed PGR and VGR land is currently under a stay order of the Gauhati High Court.
He said that ignoring the court order would lead to contempt of court, and even the police cannot act against the order. Sarma added that past eviction drives in forest areas were carried out only after the courts permitted them, sometimes after several rounds of litigation.
He also pointed out that the rights of those currently living on the land are still under legal examination. He stated that the government will hold direct discussions to clear any misunderstandings but stressed that all actions must remain within the law.
