The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam has taken five leaders of the Veer Lachit Sena from the Cyber Police Station in Guwahati for detailed questioning in connection with multiple cases of extortion and kidnapping registered against the organisation in different parts of the state.
According to police sources, the CID team brought the five individuals to its headquarters on Friday morning for interrogation. They had earlier been kept in the custody of the Cyber Police Station. The CID is reportedly questioning a total of ten persons linked to the organisation as part of its wider investigation into alleged criminal activities connected to the Veer Lachit Sena.
Among those under investigation are Rontu Pani Phukan and Bikash Axom, who are known to be prominent members of the group. Others named by the CID include Tanmay Chetia, Utpal Dutta, Biraj Ballabh, Riaz Ahmed, Mohan Ali, Chinmoy Dev, Bishwajit Doley, and Inamul Haque. All of them have been taken into custody from different districts of Assam over the past few days and were brought to Guwahati for further questioning.
CID officials said the arrests and interrogations were part of a larger operation launched recently against the Veer Lachit Sena after several complaints were received about the group’s alleged involvement in cases of extortion and unlawful confinement. Following these complaints, the CID registered a fresh case at its police station, numbered 20/25, and began collecting all previous FIRs filed against the group from various district police stations.
Sources in the CID said the process of consolidating these cases was aimed at ensuring a single, coordinated investigation. As part of this effort, the department reopened old files, re-examined earlier evidence, and carried out simultaneous raids in multiple districts across Assam. The raids led to the detention of at least 11 persons believed to be associated with the organisation.
