An emergency all-party MCLA meeting was held today at the BTCLA Auditorium Hall under the leadership of BTCLA Speaker Tridip Daimary. The meeting was called after a series of violent incidents took place on Friday in the BTCLA area, creating tension across Kokrajhar.
The unrest began after a rally organised by a group of Tribal Students of Bodoland University. The students were protesting the Assam Government’s decision to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six more communities in the state. According to sources, the protest started in a peaceful manner at the Bodoland University campus, where the students gathered with banners and placards to express their opposition to the government’s move.
The rally then moved towards the BTCLA Secretariat office. However, the situation changed as the crowd reached the main gate of the Secretariat. Witnesses said that some protesters became agitated, and the environment quickly turned tense. During the confrontation, a section of the crowd allegedly damaged several doors, windows, glass panes and other government property located near the entrance. The sudden violence caused panic in the area, and additional security personnel had to be deployed to bring the situation under control.
In response to the incident, the BTCLA leadership decided to call an emergency all-party MCLA meeting to review the situation and discuss the next steps. At the meeting, BTCLA Speaker Tridip Daimary took stock of the developments and held discussions with the attending members on how to prevent such incidents in the future. EM Derhasad Basumatary and BJP MCLA Arjun Daimary also participated in the review meeting and shared their views.
After the meeting, the leaders addressed a press conference where they spoke about the concerns raised during the discussion. They expressed worry about the turn of events and stressed the need for maintaining peace and order in the BTCLA region. They also said that while peaceful protest is a democratic right, violence cannot be accepted under any circumstances.
