A strong protest against the BJP government’s alleged corruption and land scam was organised on Wednesday at the Manabendra Sharma Complex in Guwahati. The programme was led by the Metropolitan District Congress and took place while the Assam Legislative Assembly was in session. The Congress workers gathered in large numbers and raised slogans against the ruling government, accusing it of indulging in massive corruption and ignoring the concerns of ordinary people.
The Assam Pradesh Congress held this demonstration after serious allegations surfaced against BJP MP Dilip Saikia and Minister Ashok Singhal over land grab cases. The Congress claimed that both leaders were involved in acquiring land through illegal and unethical means. The protestors demanded an immediate and fair investigation.
Addressing the protest, Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress President Mira Borthakur strongly criticised the BJP government. She said that the BJP had promised land rights and land pattas to poor people, but instead, the ruling party “ate the money” meant for them. She alleged that the BJP carried out the Gir cow scam and misused crores of rupees. According to her, “this BJP government is destroying Assam” and “looting the people of the state without fear.”
She further said that anyone who questions the government becomes a target. “When journalists ask questions, the Chief Minister threatens to talk to their owners. When people post on social media, police are sent to their homes. This has become the most corrupt government Assam has ever seen,” Borthakur said.
Raising specific allegations, she stated that Minister Ashok Singhal purchased land near Zubeen Kshetra despite it being tribal belt land. She claimed that 38 bighas of land were taken in the name of his company and questioned why no investigation had been launched.
Borthakur also criticised the Chief Minister’s family, saying that while ordinary women in Assam receive only Rs 1,200, the Chief Minister’s wife takes government subsidy without any hesitation. She asked why investigations against Dilip Saikia and Ashok Singhal were being avoided by the state government.
The Mahila Congress President also alleged that in Dhekiajuli, the wife of Ashok Singhal grabbed land belonging to a Mahila Committee. She demanded a full probe into all these matters and said the Chief Minister should take responsibility and order a proper investigation.
Referring to Pijush Hazarika’s recent social media activity, she said that instead of addressing corruption charges, BJP leaders were making AI videos showing the Chief Minister using a bulldozer. She said this was an attempt to distract the public from real issues.
She further alleged that Dilip Saikia, who once promised land pattas to poor people, is now involved in a Rs 10-crore corruption case. She questioned why the government was silent and why no inquiry had been initiated.
Mira Borthakur said the protest will continue until the government answers all the questions raised by the Congress. She added that the people of Assam deserve justice and transparency, and the Congress will keep fighting for them inside and outside the Assembly.
