BJP alleges ‘secret links’ of Akhil Gogoi with accused in Zubeen Garg death case BJP alleges ‘secret links’ of Akhil Gogoi with accused in Zubeen Garg death case

The state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi of maintaining what it called “secret links” with the accused in the Zubeen Garg death case. The allegation came a day after Gogoi claimed on social media that he had accessed a copy of the chargesheet filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case.

Addressing a press conference at Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati, BJP spokesperson and advocate Jayanta Kumar Goswami said Gogoi’s claim had raised serious questions, as the chargesheet is not available to the public or to political leaders. He described the MLA’s assertion as “highly suspicious” and demanded clarity on how Gogoi obtained the document.

Goswami said that according to PRC Case No. 4084/2025, registered at the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro), copies of the chargesheet were officially provided only to jail authorities where the seven accused are currently lodged. These include prime accused Siddharth Sharma and Shyamkanu Mahanta. Apart from this, a pen drive containing the chargesheet was handed over strictly to authorised family members who were present in court during the filing.

“No copy of the chargesheet has been provided to any third party so far,” Goswami said, adding that the court process was followed in a proper and transparent manner. He stressed that neither political parties nor individuals outside the legal framework had any right to access the document at this stage.

The BJP spokesperson alleged that if Akhil Gogoi had indeed obtained the chargesheet, it could only have been sourced from the accused themselves or from their authorised family members. This, he claimed, pointed to undisclosed connections between the MLA and those facing trial in the case.

Goswami further accused Gogoi of consistently attempting to undermine the credibility of the SIT investigation. He said the Raijor Dal leader had repeatedly questioned the contents of the chargesheet in public, even before the trial process had begun, and was “acting like a defence lawyer rather than an elected representative.”

According to the BJP, such actions could have serious consequences for the case. Goswami alleged that Gogoi’s statements were part of a broader attempt to influence public opinion, discredit government witnesses, and create pressure on the prosecution. “This kind of conduct can intimidate witnesses and weaken the judicial process,” he claimed.

The BJP also used the occasion to highlight the role of the state government in handling the case. Goswami said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Home Department ensured that the SIT completed its investigation within 86 days. The timely filing of the chargesheet, he said, demonstrated the government’s commitment to delivering justice without delay.

“The investigation was completed efficiently, and the chargesheet was filed within a reasonable time so that the judicial process could move forward,” Goswami said. He added that the government had no intention of interfering in the case and was focused on allowing the courts to decide the matter based on evidence.
