In a strong political attack, West Bengal Congress president Subhankar Sarkar on Friday criticized Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, describing his actions and the state government as “insane” and in need of urgent attention. Speaking from Kolkata, Sarkar accused the Assam government of betraying the values of Rabindranath Tagore, India’s celebrated poet and cultural icon.
“This is what a treasonous Assam government is doing. In Assam itself, ministers need psychiatric treatment. If they weren’t insane, then, as Rabindranath Tagore said, everyone would have embraced him,” Sarkar said during his address. He highlighted the paradox of Tagore’s legacy, pointing out that while the poet opposed British rule, today his songs and works are restricted in his own country, under the current laws.
Sarkar said that the pride of India, Rabindranath Tagore, is being insulted through such actions. “In our country, due to this law, we are not allowed to sing his songs. There is no limit to good songs, no country can claim them, no religion can own them. This is what Tagore’s thinking teaches us. Believe in his vision; do not blindly trust these narrow-minded people. That is why today Rabindranath is being insulted. People of Bengal will not accept this,” he added.
