The Assam government has lifted the temporary suspension of Internet and mobile data services in Baksa district, a move that comes after a period of heightened tension and unrest in the region. The decision was announced today by Sri Ajay Tewari, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam, Home & Political Department.
Earlier, on October 15, 2025, the state government had imposed a ban on Internet and mobile data services under Section 5(2) of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, in accordance with the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017. The suspension was prompted by a serious law and order situation that unfolded in Baksa district on the same day.
The notification issued on October 17 stated that the situation in Baksa had now normalized and there was no longer any apprehension of public unrest or breach of peace. Based on this assessment, the government decided to revoke the earlier order immediately. 
“All mobile service providers in Baksa district are hereby directed to restore Internet and mobile data services with immediate effect,” the notification read. This restoration will allow residents, businesses, and local authorities to resume normal communication and operations in the district.
