On Sudhakantha Bhupen Hazarika’s death anniversary, the Chief Minister announced that a 100-foot-tall statue of Bhupen Hazarika will be installed at Dhola-Sadiya, and one road in every city of the state will be named after the legendary artist. The announcement came as Assam remembered the cultural icon on his 14th death anniversary on Wednesday, with people across the state paying emotional tribute to the “Bard of Brahmaputra.”
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led the observance and said the statue near the Bhupen Hazarika Setu will be a permanent and fitting honour to the singer, composer, and poet whose work continues to inspire generations. He said the government has already started the process of naming one road in each district after the late legend so that future generations remember him every day.
The state marked the day with large-scale cultural programmes. More than two lakh people across Assam joined a coordinated tribute by singing Hazarika’s iconic song “Manuhe Manuhor Babe”. People gathered in schools, colleges, public fields, and community grounds, and many formed human chains while singing the song. According to the Chief Minister, around 5,000 people took part in this event in each district. He also said the state would request the United Nations to recognise the song as a global “song of humanity.”
Special programmes took place across 35 districts and 27 sub-divisions. Government officials, students, artists, and residents took part in the observance. Cultural organisations hosted music programmes, while educational institutions held remembrance events where teachers spoke about Bhupen Hazarika’s life and his contribution to Assam and the country. Television and radio channels broadcast his songs and documentaries throughout the day.
The Chief Minister said that this year marks Hazarika’s birth centenary celebrations, which began earlier with a programme inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said the celebration will conclude at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. He also mentioned that a Swahid Smark will be inaugurated on December 10, and performances of “Swahid Pronamu Tumak” will take place across the state as part of cultural events.
Bhupen Hazarika, born in Tinsukia in 1926, remains one of the most respected artistic voices from Assam. His songs carried themes of humanity, unity, and social harmony, and his music portrayed the life and emotions of the Assamese people and the Northeast region. His deep voice and powerful lyrics earned him love and recognition across India and abroad.
