Security forces in Manipur prevented a possible tragedy on Sunday after two powerful improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were found and safely destroyed in Jiribam district. The recovery of these explosives, weighing about 12 kilograms each, has once again highlighted the alertness and quick action of the security personnel working in the conflict-hit state.
According to officials, the operation was carried out by the Assam Rifles based on specific intelligence inputs received from security agencies. Acting on the information, a search was launched in the Makha Basti area of Jiribam. During the operation, the personnel discovered two IEDs along with three electric power sources of around 500 grams each and about 12 meters of Cordex, a type of detonation cord used in explosives.
Realizing the threat posed to nearby residents, a Bomb Disposal Team was called to the site. The team destroyed both devices on the spot through a controlled detonation using service-grade explosives. Officials confirmed that the area was immediately secured, and no injuries or property damage were reported during the operation.
The successful recovery and disposal of the explosives come at a tense time for Manipur, a state that has witnessed several incidents of unrest and violence over the past year. With the region still recovering from prolonged ethnic and political tensions, the discovery of these bombs could have led to a major disaster had it not been for the timely response of the security forces.
Since the imposition of President’s Rule, security agencies have intensified operations across the state to prevent any attempts by anti-social groups to create instability. The Assam Rifles have been maintaining a close watch along sensitive areas, particularly in border districts like Jiribam, where security concerns remain high due to the state’s volatile environment.
