The Assam Police, along with the Transport Department, carried out strict checks against drunk driving across Guwahati on New Year’s Eve. The checking drive was conducted on the night of December 31 at several locations in the city. The main aim of the operation was to prevent accidents and ensure that roads remained safe during New Year celebrations.
Police officials said that every vehicle passing through the checking points was stopped. Drivers were asked to take breath analyser tests to confirm whether they had consumed alcohol. Those who were found drunk while driving were penalised as per traffic rules. In many cases, their driving licences were also seized. Officials said that the authorities followed a strict “No Compromise” policy during the operation, and no relaxation was given to offenders.
However, the drive was not only about penalising people. Police also encouraged safe driving and responsible behaviour. Drivers who were found sober were greeted politely. Many of them were given red roses and chocolates by the Assam Police and were also wished a Happy New Year. This gesture was meant to spread awareness in a positive way and motivate people to follow the rules.
Even while they were on duty, the traffic police personnel marked the arrival of the New Year at midnight. At exactly 12 o’clock, traffic officials at the ABC Point cut a cake to welcome the New Year. The moment was simple and symbolic, showing that police personnel also share festive joy while performing their duty.
Officials further informed that Road Safety Month has started from January 1. This awareness campaign will continue for a month. During this period, regular checking and awareness drives will be conducted across the city and the state. The main focus will be on preventing accidents and reminding drivers to follow the law.
Senior officers from the Transport Department, Traffic Police, and Assam Police supervised the operation at different points across Guwahati. The authorities said that compared to previous years, there has been a noticeable reduction in road accidents. They expressed hope that with more awareness and strict checking, accident numbers will reduce further.
