Baksa district in Assam witnessed violent protests on Wednesday as five accused in the Zubeen Garg death case were brought to the district jail at Mushalpur for judicial custody. The unrest escalated when protesters set vehicles on fire and pelted stones at security personnel, injuring a female officer and damaging police vehicles.

In response to the situation, the Assam government issued an immediate order temporarily suspending all internet and mobile data services across Baksa district. The order, approved by the Director General of Police, allows exceptions only for urgent medical needs. Voice calls and fixed-line broadband remain functional. Authorities cited fears that social media and online platforms could be used to spread inflammatory messages, potentially worsening the situation.

Meanwhile, the Baksa District Magistrate, Gautam Das, imposed prohibitory orders near the jail under Section 163 BNSS. The order bans all gatherings, processions, demonstrations, strikes, and shouting of slogans within 500 meters of the jail. Carrying weapons such as sticks, daggers, or lathis, as well as throwing stones or bursting crackers, is strictly prohibited. Security forces have been deployed in and around the jail to maintain law and order, and authorities have urged residents to cooperate and avoid the area.

The protests erupted when the accused — Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Sandeepan Garg, Nandeswar Bora, and Paresh Baishya — were escorted to the jail under heavy police presence. Security personnel detained several protesters and used batons to disperse the crowd. The five accused are now held under special surveillance in the jail complex.
