Assam observed Asom Divas on Tuesday, a day that reminds people of the arrival of Chaolung Sukaphaa, the founder of the Ahom kingdom, who reached the region in 1228 AD. Across the state, people took time to remember his long journey, his leadership, and his role in shaping what later became a strong and culturally rich Assam.

Sukaphaa is remembered as the first Ahom king, and his dynasty ruled Assam for nearly 600 years. Many historians say that the Ahom rule laid the basic framework for the identity, unity, and administration of the region. For many people, Asom Divas is not just a day of celebration but also a reminder of the long history that connects different communities of Assam.

According to historical records, Sukaphaa was born a prince of the Su or Tsu (Tiger) clan in Mong Mao, in an area that is now part of China’s Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture. He had to leave his homeland after a dispute within the royal family blocked his way to the throne. This led him on a long and difficult journey that lasted nearly 13 years, passing through forests, hills, and unfamiliar territories. His journey finally ended in Namrup, in present-day Assam, where he laid the foundation of the Ahom kingdom.

One of the most important aspects of Sukaphaa’s rule was his approach to expansion and governance. Unlike many rulers of his time who relied on force, Sukaphaa is believed to have built relationships with local tribes by understanding their customs, languages, and traditions. He encouraged peaceful integration and mutual respect. This approach earned him the title Chaolung Sukaphaa, meaning “Lord Great,” and also made him a symbol of unity.

The Assam government declared Asom Divas an official observance in 1996, and since then, it has been celebrated every year with cultural events and community programmes. Many districts in Assam marked the day with traditional music, folk performances, and dances such as Bagurumba, Bihu, and Bhortal, showcasing the state’s cultural richness.

People in different parts of the state also reflected on how Sukaphaa’s ideas of harmony continue to hold relevance today. His belief that communities can grow together when they respect each other’s ways of life remains a message that many still value.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also extended his greetings on the occasion of Asom Divas. In a message shared on social media, he wrote, “Warm wishes to our sisters and brothers of Assam on #AsomDivas. This occasion commemorates the glory of the Ahom era and fortifies our commitment to protecting the rich culture of Assam, in which every Indian takes great pride.”

Shah spoke about the progress seen in Assam over the past nine years and said that the Modi-led NDA government has helped bring peace to the region. He expressed confidence that the development of Assam would continue with the same pace and strength in the coming years.
