Assam democracy under threat? Akhil Gogoi alleges BJP masterplan to erase voters Assam democracy under threat? Akhil Gogoi alleges BJP masterplan to erase voters

Sibsagar MLA and Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi has made serious allegations against the Assam BJP leadership, claiming that senior party leaders discussed a plan to remove the names of voters from electoral rolls during a recent party video conference. Gogoi said the meeting, held on January 4, 2026, was chaired by state BJP president Dilip Saikia and attended by ministers, MLAs, district presidents and party workers.

Gogoi made the allegations during a Facebook Live session, where he said that the meeting took place while the BJP was conducting its ongoing wall-writing campaign ahead of the elections. He claimed that he came to know of the meeting through a particular online link and quietly listened to the conversation without actively joining the session. Another leader from his party had also heard the discussion, he added.

Gogoi said the contents of the meeting had disturbed him deeply.

According to him, BJP president Dilip Saikia first praised Minister Jogen Mohan during the conference. Saikia then reportedly instructed party officials to submit the names of BJP MLAs who did not attend the meeting. Gogoi also claimed that Saikia asked MLAs and workers to mobilise at least 500 people across Assam for the wall-writing campaign on January 5.

However, Gogoi alleged that the most troubling part of the discussion concerned the ongoing Special Revision of electoral rolls in Assam. He claimed that Saikia scolded some MLAs for not giving enough importance to the revision of the voter list.

Gogoi further alleged that Minister Ashok Singhal had been given charge of around 60 assembly constituencies and was allowed a “free hand” in dealing with the voter list. He said instructions were reportedly issued to prepare booth-level lists of voters whose names should be deleted in areas where the BJP does not expect electoral support. At the same time, names were to be added in certain other constituencies where the party is considered weak.

Gogoi claimed that the deadline for completing these deletions was January 12.

He also alleged that some MLAs had privately told him inside the Assam Assembly that the Chief Minister had earlier instructed legislators to remove at least 10,000 names per constituency from the voter list, while also adding names where required.

During his Facebook Live session, Gogoi said he had tagged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma before going online, adding that the Chief Minister himself had once said he watches Gogoi’s live videos. Gogoi challenged the government to prove him wrong and said he was even ready to undergo a narco analysis test if his statements were false. He added that he had an eyewitness who had listened to the video conference.

Gogoi demanded either a CBI inquiry or a judicial probe into the entire matter to verify his allegations.

He also claimed that after the recent delimitation exercise, Minister Ashok Singhal — whom he described as originally coming from outside the state — had reshaped several constituencies dominated by communities such as Moran, Matak, Ahom, Koch Rajbongshi and tea tribes. Gogoi alleged that this restructuring was done under the Chief Minister’s direction to help the BJP gain electoral advantage.

The BJP and the Assam government have not yet issued any official response to these allegations. The claims come at a time when the voter list revision process is underway across the state, and any confirmed irregularity could have significant political consequences.
