Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today briefed the media on several important decisions taken during the State Cabinet meeting, focusing on reforms in the education sector, welfare of National Health Mission (NHM) employees, and preparations for the inauguration of the newly built Swahid Smarak in Guwahati.

Addressing reporters, the Chief Minister said that the government has decided to fix the tenure of Principals and Registrars of educational institutions that have been upgraded from colleges to universities at three years. He said this step has been taken to ensure smooth academic functioning in these newly upgraded institutions and to bring more stability in their administrative work.

Sarma also announced a major relief measure for the families of NHM employees. He said that in the unfortunate event of the death of an NHM staff member, the family will now receive more than Rs 7 lakh as ex-gratia support. Earlier, the amount was Rs 5 lakh. “Instead of the earlier Rs 5 lakh, the family will now get Rs 7 lakh. This decision has been taken to support the families in times of hardship,” he said.
