Senior Bodo leader and Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) chief Hagrama Mohilary has issued a strong and clear warning against illegal people and illegal structures, stating that there will be no compromise when it comes to enforcing the law. He said that all illegal structures will have to be removed and illegal settlers will have to leave, wherever they are found.

Speaking on the issue, Mohilary made it clear that the drive against illegal settlements is not targeted at any community but is purely based on the law. He said that if someone is illegal, as defined under the law, then that person cannot stay, whether it is in Assam, BTC, or the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). “If the law says someone is illegal, then they have to go. There is no other option,” he said.

Mohilary referred to the Assam Accord, saying that the Accord clearly mentions who is illegal and what action should be taken. He said that the rules written in the Accord must be followed strictly and uniformly across the state. According to him, the same law applies everywhere, including areas under BTC. “BTC is part of Assam. We must follow the rules, regulations, and laws of Assam,” he said.

The BTC chief also reacted strongly to recent statements made by office-bearers of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha. He questioned why a literary body was speaking on political and administrative matters. Mohilary said that the Sahitya Sabha is meant for literature and culture, not for politics. “They are a literary organisation. They should focus on Sahitya. They should not do politics or make political statements,” he said.

He further said that presidents or leaders of non-political bodies should avoid making public comments on sensitive political and administrative issues. According to him, such statements only create confusion among people and complicate matters that are clearly defined by law.

On the issue of eviction, Mohilary said that if any structure is illegal, then it is an illegal structure and must be removed. He rejected claims that the eviction process itself is illegal. “If something is illegal, removing it is not illegal. The law is very clear on this,” he said.

Mohilary also stressed that maintaining law and order is the responsibility of the administration and elected governments. He said that no one should try to weaken the authority of the law by giving misleading statements. “Whether it is BTC, BTR, or any other part of Assam, the rule is the same. Illegal people cannot stay,” he said.

He added that following the law is necessary to protect genuine citizens and to maintain peace and stability in the region. He urged people to understand the issue calmly and not get influenced by political or emotional statements.

The BTC chief said that the administration will continue to act as per law and there will be no backing down on the issue of illegal settlements. “The law of Assam will be followed. There is no question about it,” he said.
