The Assam Legislative Assembly turned into a scene of chaos today as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi engaged in a heated confrontation during the debate on The Assam Fixation of Ceiling of Land Holdings (Amendment) Bill, 2025. What was expected to be a routine discussion on land reforms quickly escalated into a bitter political showdown, with personal accusations and old controversies taking center stage.
The trouble began when CM Himanta accused Akhil Gogoi of running the Orchid Park without paying the required government taxes. The allegation immediately raised tensions. During the exchange, the Chief Minister revived a sensitive matter from 2014, questioning Gogoi over the death of KMSS activist Pranab Boro. In a pointed remark, Himanta asked, “Did you burn Pranab Boro or not?” The statement triggered an uproar in the House, with ruling party MLAs shouting slogans against Gogoi, while Speaker Biswajit Daimary struggled to restore order.
Gogoi responded sharply by bringing up a decades-old case—the murder of Congress leader Manabendra Sarma in February 1991. He accused the Chief Minister of being implicated in the case during his time in Congress, referencing past statements by former CM Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, who had alleged Himanta’s involvement with ULFA in the killing—a charge the Chief Minister has consistently denied. By raising this sensitive topic, Gogoi sought to counter the personal attacks in the same manner.
The verbal clash intensified as the Chief Minister called Gogoi a “murderer,” “duplicate farmer leader,” and “anti–tea worker,” and expressed his discomfort at sharing the House with him. Members from both ruling and opposition benches joined the fray, turning the Assembly into a battlefield of accusations, with the legislative business repeatedly stalled.
