Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has raised concerns over the charge sheet prepared in the investigation into singer Zubeen Garg’s death, saying the document does not move the state any closer to real justice. He said the people of Assam have waited months for clarity, but the investigation still appears to have major gaps.

Speaking to reporters, Gogoi said the entire state will be watching closely when the charge sheet is submitted in court on Friday. “Tomorrow, the eyes of the entire state will be on Zubeen Garg’s charge sheet. We all hope for a fair investigation. However, I know this charge sheet will not provide justice,” he said.

Gogoi argued that the charge sheet seems to focus mainly on the motive behind the killing, which has been repeatedly mentioned by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in recent statements. “The charge sheet mentions why Zubeen Garg was killed – whether for money or other reasons. But it does not identify who committed the murder or how it was carried out. Simply stating the motive is not enough,” he added.

He further said that filing a charge sheet without naming the actual perpetrators or explaining how the murder took place leaves the investigation incomplete and raises serious doubts about the direction of the case.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is set to submit the charge sheet tomorrow in connection with FIR No. 18/2025, one of the most closely watched cases in recent years. According to officials, the document spans more than 3,500 pages. During the investigation, the SIT interrogated over 300 people, reviewed multiple sets of evidence, and analysed material from several districts.

Currently, seven people are in judicial custody in connection with the case: event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, manager Siddharth Sharma, singer Amritprabha Mahanta, musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, cousin Sandipan Garg (DSP), and PSOs Paresh Baishya and Nandeshwar Bora.
