Akhil Gogoi: Opposition will fight 2026 Assam polls together Akhil Gogoi: Opposition will fight 2026 Assam polls together

Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi on Sunday said that the opposition parties in Assam are likely to contest the 2026 Assembly elections in a united manner. He was speaking at a workers’ meeting of Raijor Dal held in Dhemaji, where more than a hundred people from different political backgrounds joined the party.

The meeting was organised by the Raijor Dal unit of the Dhemaji Assembly constituency and was held at Swagat Hotel in Dhemaji. Party workers, community leaders and supporters from different areas attended the event. During the programme, Akhil Gogoi formally welcomed several new entrants into the party and said that Raijor Dal is slowly expanding its organisational base in different districts.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Akhil Gogoi criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent visit to Assam. He said that the visit should be viewed as part of the BJP’s political preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections in 2026. According to him, the ruling party is planning to campaign on the basis of communal issues, and this visit is linked to that strategy. He stated that the people of Assam should remain cautious about such politics.

Akhil Gogoi also spoke about the possible formation of a united opposition front in Assam ahead of the 2026 polls. He said that the opposition parties are expected to come together to fight the elections jointly. In his words, unity among opposition forces will make the contest stronger and more effective. He further added that Raijor Dal will seek to contest seats only in those constituencies where the party feels confident about winning, instead of making unnecessary claims.

During his address, Gogoi also commented on the long-pending demand for granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities of Assam. He alleged that the Chief Minister has created confusion and suspicion among the leaders and members of these communities. He said that many community organisations had not made such demands before the elections, and now several leaders are being pushed into a situation of doubt.

He also made a remark that although a few leaders may have “sold out,” there are still many community leaders who continue to stand firm. He appealed to these leaders to speak up more strongly on the issue of tribal recognition and to continue their movement in a peaceful and democratic manner.

The workers’ meeting in Dhemaji focused on strengthening Raijor Dal at the grassroots level. Party workers discussed organisational matters, local concerns and the political scenario in the run-up to the 2026 elections.

Akhil Gogoi told party members that they should work closely with local people, listen to public problems and build trust in the community. He said that politics should be people-centric and based on social justice. He also said that Raijor Dal will continue to raise issues related to land rights, economic hardship and community welfare.
