Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi has called on all opposition parties in Assam to come together ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. He said that a united opposition front would be important if the ruling BJP is to be challenged in the state. Gogoi added that Raijor Dal would work with other opposition parties and would not seek seats in a way that creates problems or conflicts with them.
He was speaking at a large public meeting and party enrollment programme held in Lakhimpur on Saturday. During the event, around 300 new members joined Raijor Dal. The party described the programme as part of its efforts to expand its base across different constituencies in Assam. Among those who joined was Dr. Harikanta Das, who has been projected as the party’s candidate for the Naoboicha constituency and also serves as the party’s vice-president for the area.
Gogoi said the new members would strengthen the party at the grassroots level. He stated that Raijor Dal is gradually expanding in North Assam and gaining support in constituencies such as Naoboicha, Dhemaji, Sissiborgaon, and Ranganadi. According to him, these areas are increasingly showing interest in the People’s Party platform and its political message.
During his speech, Gogoi stressed the importance of early coordination among opposition forces. He said that once a common platform of opposition parties is formed, the ruling party would begin to face serious political pressure. In his words, “From the day the opposition platform emerges, the BJP’s hour will strike.” His statement reflected his belief that cooperation among non-BJP parties will play a key role in the coming elections.
At present, Raijor Dal is active in about 42 constituencies across Assam. The party is focusing on building local units, organizing people at the village level, and preparing its election strategy well in advance. Gogoi said that the party wants to strengthen its grassroots connection rather than rely only on big rallies or public statements.
He also criticized the present state government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Gogoi alleged that the Chief Minister is more focused on wealth and property than on public issues. He accused the government of ignoring the basic needs and concerns of ordinary citizens. According to Gogoi, public welfare should be the main duty of the government, but he claimed that this responsibility is not being fulfilled.
On social harmony, Gogoi made serious accusations against the Chief Minister. He said that the government is encouraging divisions between different communities and creating a climate of mistrust. “Those instigating Hindu-Muslim conflicts are none other than Himanta Biswa Sarma,” he stated. Gogoi argued that Assam needs unity and understanding among communities instead of polarization.
Gogoi also said that Raijor Dal wants to practice a different style of politics. He said the party aims to work closely with people and represent local issues inside and outside the Assembly. He repeated that the party would not act in a way that weakens or splits the opposition vote. Instead, he said Raijor Dal wants genuine cooperation with like-minded parties who share similar views on democracy, rights, and social justice.
