Raijor Dal president and Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi on Tuesday began an indefinite hunger strike at Chachal, Guwahati, demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the death of Assam’s music icon Zubeen Garg.
Speaking to reporters, Gogoi called for the immediate arrest of all individuals allegedly involved in Garg’s death. Criticizing the police for inaction, he said, “When petty thieves face encounters, why are those accused in Zubeen Garg’s death allowed to go live on Facebook and enjoy Durga Puja holidays?”
The Raijor Dal chief also raised concerns about a large-scale financial scam linked to the North East Festival, claiming the involvement of several political leaders. He urged the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate the matter thoroughly.
Gogoi further questioned the detention of Ajay Phukan and Victor Das under the National Security Act (NSA), demanding explanations from the Governor and seeking their immediate release. He also highlighted a fashion show organized by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma shortly after Garg’s death, insisting that those associated clarify their roles publicly.
Emphasizing that seeking justice for Zubeen Garg should not be considered sedition, Gogoi said, “If this is sedition, then every Assamese stands guilty of it.”
Earlier in the day, Gogoi, along with Raijor Dal members, submitted a memorandum to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Raj Bhavan, demanding a fair and transparent probe into Garg’s death. Sources indicated that the Governor has decided not to participate in this year’s Durga Puja celebrations and will not observe his birthday on October 3, citing the somber atmosphere.
Vowing to continue his protest until action is taken, Gogoi stated, “I will remain on hunger strike until the Chief Minister himself comes to Chachal and addresses the people directly.” The protest has drawn attention across Assam, reflecting widespread public concern over the circumstances surrounding the beloved singer’s death.
