Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi demanded that the state government cancel the upcoming Post Malone concert in Guwahati. The concert is planned for December 8, 2025 under the government’s new Concert Economy Policy. Gogoi said that it is not the right time for such a big entertainment programme because the people of Assam are still waiting for answers about the sudden and tragic death of legendary singer Zubeen Garg.

Gogoi said that until the real truth about Zubeen Garg’s death is made public, the government should not go ahead with this concert. He said that Zubeen was not just a singer but a cultural icon and a hero for the people of Assam, and the government must respect the emotions of the public. According to him, the state must first ensure justice for Zubeen, and only then think about celebrating or organising global music shows.

In a statement, Gogoi said, “We demand that the government cancel the entertainment event featuring Post Malone until justice is served for our beloved icon Zubeen Garg. Such extravagant programmes must be suspended until the actual truth behind his death is revealed to the people.” He also said that the Chief Minister should be the one to come forward and clear everything related to this matter before they go ahead with any major event.

Gogoi also criticised the state government for planning to spend more than ₹100 crore on the Post Malone concert. He suggested that instead of spending such a huge amount on a single event, the government should use that money to build a Zubeen Garg Cultural University in Guwahati. He said that this would be a meaningful way to honour Zubeen Garg and keep his legacy alive for generations. According to Gogoi, such a university would promote art, culture, and talent in the state and give young people a strong cultural platform.

He said, “The state government is ready to splurge over ₹100 crore for a single concert, while ignoring the emotions of millions mourning Zubeen Garg. That money should instead go toward building a cultural university in his name — a lasting monument to his artistic legacy.”

He also said that Assam does not need foreign artists to prove its cultural strength. Gogoi pointed out that Assam already has many talented musicians who are doing well in India and even globally. He recalled how Zubeen Garg worked with and inspired many young artists, some of whom are now performing with popular singers like Kailash Kher and Arijit Singh. Gogoi said this proves that Assam’s talent is strong and respected, and the state does not need outside validation to celebrate its culture.
