The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) today said that it now wants its own leader to be sent to the Rajya Sabha, after years of supporting the Congress in Upper House elections. Senior AIUDF leader Aminul Islam made the party’s stand clear while addressing the media, saying that this time the party expects fair representation for its leadership and the community it represents.
Speaking to reporters, Aminul Islam said that the AIUDF has, for a long time, stood by the Congress and supported its candidates for the Rajya Sabha. However, he said the situation has now changed and the party believes it is time for AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal to be sent to the Upper House of Parliament.
Islam said that the demand is genuine and based on political understanding and past cooperation. He said that many communities represented by AIUDF still do not have a voice in the Rajya Sabha. According to him, sending Badruddin Ajmal to the Upper House would help ensure that these voices are heard at the national level.
The AIUDF leader also recalled how the party has consistently extended support to opposition unity in Assam. He said that since 2016, AIUDF has stood with the Congress and other opposition parties on many important political occasions, including parliamentary matters. “We have always supported the Congress when it came to Rajya Sabha elections. This time, we are asking for the same support in return,” Islam said.
Aminul Islam, who represents Constituency No. 21 Mankachar and belongs to the All India United Democratic Front, stressed that the demand is not about personal ambition but about maintaining balance and trust within the opposition. He said opposition unity would become stronger if all partners felt respected and fairly treated.
Referring to past political events, Islam mentioned earlier Rajya Sabha elections and internal differences within the opposition that affected outcomes. Without naming individuals in detail, he said confusion, lack of coordination, and internal disagreements had weakened the opposition at crucial moments. He said such mistakes should not be repeated if the opposition wants to present a strong challenge to the BJP.
Islam also spoke about the importance of unity among opposition parties, especially at a time when the ruling party is trying to consolidate its position. He said that division among opposition parties would only benefit the BJP. According to him, if the opposition stands together, it can prevent the BJP from gaining an advantage in Rajya Sabha numbers from Assam.
He said that AIUDF does not want confrontation or conflict with its allies. “This is not a threat or a clash. This is an appeal,” he said, adding that the party only wants the previous understanding between opposition partners to be honoured. He said AIUDF has never walked away from the opposition alliance and has no intention of doing so now.
Aminul Islam also said discussions with other opposition leaders would continue. He confirmed that talks would be held with Congress leaders and other parties to explain AIUDF’s position. He expressed hope that once the main opposition party agrees, others will also come on board.
On questions related to past allegations, internal disputes and claims of betrayal during previous elections, Islam avoided going into details. He said his focus was not on reopening old wounds but on moving forward with clarity and unity. “What happened in the past should teach us lessons. What matters now is the future,” he said.
The AIUDF leader also said that the party’s demand is rooted in constitutional and democratic rights. He said every political party that has public support deserves representation in Parliament. He added that AIUDF has a strong voter base and a clear political presence in Assam, which should be reflected at the national level.
