Assam Police have arrested Bikash Axom, former member of the vigilante organisation Veer Lachit Sena who had been on the run since his expulsion from the group earlier this month. Axom was reportedly apprehended following leads by law-enforcement teams tracking his whereabouts while his mobile phones remained switched off.
Axom had been officially removed from all responsibilities within the organisation and expelled from its membership on October 27, after a press conference by Veer Lachit Sena leadership in Guwahati flagged his alleged comments and absence. According to Veer Lachit Sena’s central office, a probe-committee was constituted against him and another member named in a police FIR.
In a letter released earlier, Axom claimed he faced political harassment and insisted he would surrender at “the right time”. He denied wrongdoing, saying, “Am I not entitled to demand justice?” in relation to his involvement in the “Justice for Zubeen Garg” campaign.
