The All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) has strongly criticized Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his recent remarks regarding the Miya community, warning against any attempt to target a particular group in Assam.

Ainuddeen Ahmed, Chief Advisor to the Chief Minister and a prominent leader of AAMSU, led the response. “Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is constantly being haunted by Miya’s ghost. Himanta Biswa Sarma can never eliminate Miya. Miya was in Assam, is in Assam, and will always remain in Assam,” Ahmed said in a clear warning to the state government.

Ahmed accused the Chief Minister of belittling an entire community while holding a constitutional office. “Stop targeting a particular community in the name of Hindu–Muslim divisions,” he urged. He emphasized that the Miya community is an inseparable part of Assamese society, living in the state with unity, harmony, and brotherhood for generations.

“This is their constitutional right. No one, not even the Chief Minister, can take this right away,” Ahmed added. “The Miya community can never be wiped out, and the Chief Minister himself knows this very well.” The AAMSU leader further stated that the remarks have lowered the dignity of the office of the Chief Minister. “We will never accept any attempt to target a specific community,” he said.

The students’ body also called on the Chief Minister to focus on ensuring justice in other matters, particularly citing singer Zubeen Garg, rather than making what AAMSU described as “senseless statements.”

The controversy comes amid another incident in Assam where a Facebook page allegedly posted derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad, along with a photograph of the Chief Minister. The post went viral quickly, prompting widespread condemnation from minority groups, student organizations, and civil society.

AAMSU described the post as “completely unacceptable” and warned that such comments could spark tensions between communities. In response, the Hojai district unit of AAMSU lodged an FIR at the Doboka Police Station, demanding immediate action against those responsible for uploading the offensive content.

The organization reiterated that the Miya community’s rights are protected under the Constitution and cannot be undermined by anyone.
