The All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) chief adviser, Ainuddin Ahmed, on Thursday strongly criticised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his recent remarks about what he described as “unknown people.” Ahmed said the Chief Minister’s comments were deeply troubling and could affect the peaceful environment that people in the state have tried to maintain for many years.

In his reaction, Ahmed said the Chief Minister was “trying to capture power through communal politics” and called him a “power-hungry man.” According to Ahmed, such statements do not help the state move forward and instead create unnecessary tension among communities. He said people in Assam want development and peaceful coexistence, but the Chief Minister’s comments point in the opposite direction.

The issue began after Sarma reportedly said that “unknown people should not be given any work” and that “land should not be sold to them.” Ahmed said these comments were hurtful and completely avoidable. He added that such statements can harm trust and understanding between communities. “The Chief Minister of Assam, by making such remarks, has destroyed unity, harmony, and brotherhood. We condemn him. He is doing divisive politics,” Ahmed said.

He also claimed that the Chief Minister has failed to ensure equal development for all communities in the state. According to him, if development had reached every caste and tribe, the government would not need to make such remarks that create separation. Ahmed said these comments “insult every community” living in Assam.

The AAMSU leader further said that the Chief Minister’s position comes with responsibility, and such remarks do not match the dignity of a constitutional post. “Holding a constitutional position and still making such comments is unconstitutional. Who has given you the right to make such remarks? Everyone has constitutional rights… and you cannot reduce or violate these rights,” he said.

Ahmed added that organisations like AAMSU will continue to raise their voice whenever comments or actions threaten the unity of the state. He said the people of Assam want to live in peace, and leaders should focus on inclusive development instead of making statements that divide communities.
