Prime Minister Narendra Modi today evening witnessed a grand Bagurumba dance performance at Sarusajai Stadium, marking one of the largest cultural showcases ever organised for the Bodo community in Assam.
The mega event, titled Bagurumba Dwhou, brought together more than 10,000 artistes who performed the traditional Bodo folk dance before a packed audience. The programme drew thousands of spectators from across the state and beyond, turning Sarusajai into a vibrant celebration of music, rhythm and tradition. The cultural evening concluded with a laser light show, bringing the event to a close at around 7.44 pm.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was present alongside the Prime Minister, said the programme was organised to take Bagurumba to a wider national and global audience. He stated that the initiative reflects the state government’s effort to showcase Assam’s rich cultural heritage and give traditional art forms the recognition they deserve.
Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi began his speech in Bodo and Assamese and extended Magh Bihu greetings to the people of Assam. He spoke about the deep cultural roots of the state and said Assam’s traditions carry a special sense of joy and harmony. The Prime Minister noted that he has closely observed Assam’s culture over the years and described it as a privilege to be part of such moments.
He also referred to the changes witnessed in the state, saying areas once affected by unrest are now known for peace and cultural expression. According to him, the sounds of violence have been replaced by traditional instruments such as the Kham and Siphung, reflecting a positive transformation.
Earlier in the evening, the Prime Minister paid tribute to Jyoti Prasad Agarwala and was presented with a portrait of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma. He also briefly played the traditional Bodo musical instrument Serja, which was met with applause from the audience.
The Chief Minister informed that around 32,000 people had collected entry passes for the event. However, seating inside the stadium was limited as two galleries were closed to accommodate the large-scale dance performance. He appealed to the public for cooperation and urged people not to gather along national highways due to traffic and security arrangements linked to the Prime Minister’s movement.
BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary also addressed the gathering and requested the Centre to complete the remaining phases of the BTC agreement, while thanking the government for supporting the cultural programme.
