Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the investigation being carried out by authorities in Assam into the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg is entirely different from the proceedings taking place in Singapore. The Chief Minister said both processes are independent and follow their own legal systems, and political leaders should not comment on matters that are before a court.

Responding to questions from the media in Guwahati, Sarma said he would not react to the observations or findings being discussed in Singapore’s coroner’s court. He stressed that it is not proper for politicians to interfere or make statements when a judicial process is underway.

“Whatever is being reported in the media, I have also read the same. Our investigation is different, and theirs is different,” the Chief Minister said. He added that since the matter is under judicial consideration, it would not be appropriate for him to make any further remarks.

The Chief Minister explained that the Singapore Police had already completed their investigation and submitted a report, which is now being examined by the court there. That process, he said, falls entirely under Singapore’s legal framework. At the same time, he pointed out that the Assam Police and other Indian agencies are conducting their own probe as per Indian law.

Sarma cautioned that any statement made by political leaders on such sensitive matters can be interpreted in many ways by the public. “Since the matter is before the court, politicians should not interfere. We should stay away from what the court has said,” he said.

His remarks come at a time when public discussion has intensified following reports from Singapore regarding the circumstances surrounding Zubeen Garg’s death. Media reports have quoted submissions made before the Singapore Coroner’s Court, which have drawn widespread attention, especially in Assam, where the singer enjoys a massive fan following.

Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most popular and respected cultural figures, passed away last year while he was in Singapore. Since then, the case has remained a subject of emotional concern for many people in the state. Fans, cultural organisations and members of the public have been closely following developments related to the case, both in India and abroad.

Addressing this heightened public interest, the Chief Minister urged restraint and patience. He reiterated that investigations carried out in different countries cannot be mixed or compared, as each country follows its own laws and procedures. “The inquiry in Singapore is under their jurisdiction. Investigations by Indian agencies are proceeding independently,” he said.

Sarma also said that he had no additional information beyond what has already appeared in the media. “Whatever is being reported is what I have also seen. Beyond that, I do not have anything more to say,” he remarked.
