Suspended MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed in a Facebook post raised pointed questions against three senior political figures: Debabrata Saikia, Pradyut Bordoloi and Gaurav Gogoi. The post, written in a questioning yet sarcastic tone, has drawn attention for bringing internal differences and serious allegations into the public domain.
In his post, Sherman Ali directly addressed Debabrata Saikia, the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly. Referring to what he described as information “heard” from various quarters, Sherman Ali questioned whether a case numbered 81/2004 had been registered against Saikia in a CBI court in connection with the alleged LOC scam. He mentioned sections such as 120B and 420 of the Indian Penal Code and asked whether these charges were true.
Sherman Ali went further to question how, if such a case indeed exists, Saikia continues to move freely and hold the post of Leader of the Opposition even under the present BJP-led government in the state. In a sarcastic remark, he asked what kind of “magic” was working in Saikia’s favour, adding that if such a method became known, it could benefit many others facing legal trouble. Though framed as questions, the remarks were clearly accusatory in nature and quickly sparked reactions within political circles.
The suspended MLA then turned his attention to Pradyut Bordoloi, a sitting Member of Parliament from Assam. Sherman Ali referred to a reported media statement in which Bordoloi allegedly said that he does not recognise the president of a national organisation belonging to a community that played a major role in his electoral victory. Calling this statement surprising, Sherman Ali accused the MP of showing sympathy before minority voters during elections but remaining silent after winning.
In the same context, Sherman Ali alleged that Bordoloi failed to raise his voice during what he described as difficult times for minorities. He specifically mentioned eviction drives carried out by the state government in areas such as Jagiroad, which falls under Bordoloi’s parliamentary constituency. He also referred to the alleged harassment of Indian citizens under suspicion of being Bangladeshis, claiming that the MP did not speak out strongly on these issues. Ending this section with a warning, Sherman Ali wrote that time spares no one.
The Facebook post also addressed Gaurav Gogoi, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. Sherman Ali alleged that Debabrata Saikia, Pradyut Bordoloi and a few minority leaders were together weaving what he called a “web of conspiracy” against Gogoi. He suggested that the coming days would reveal whether the state party chief would be able to free himself from this internal trap.
Using a symbolic reference from the Ramayana, Sherman Ali compared the present situation to Ravana’s golden Lanka, which he said was destroyed due to an internal enemy, Vibhishana. He urged Gaurav Gogoi to become firm and uncompromising to control what he described as wrongdoing within the organisation, adding that this, according to him, was the need of the moment.
