Nearly four months after the sudden death of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore, his wife Garima Garg has broken her silence with a detailed and strongly worded public note, laying out the family’s position, the sequence of events after his death, and their continued demand for a complete and transparent probe in both Singapore and India.

In a Facebook post made public on Wednesday, Garima Garg said the family decided to place the facts before the people of Assam, the Government of Assam, and everyone who loved Zubeen Garg “in the spirit of transparency, dignity, and truth.” The post directly addresses questions, doubts, and speculation that have circulated since the singer’s death on September 19, 2025, and makes it clear that the family believes the death was “not normal” and raises serious unanswered questions.

Garima Garg said the family was pushed into deep shock and trauma after Zubeen Garg’s sudden death in Singapore. According to her statement, the loss was devastating and left the family emotionally paralysed in the initial days.

She clarified that during this critical period, the family was not in a mental or emotional condition to immediately initiate legal action. “From the moment we lost Zubeen Garg on 19th September 2025 in Singapore, our family has lived in a state of shock, grief, and profound personal trauma,” she wrote.

The post stresses that the delay in taking legal steps should not be misunderstood as inaction or indifference. Instead, it was the natural response of a grieving family trying to process an unexpected and tragic loss.

According to Garima Garg, the turning point came a few days after the death, when videos related to the incident on a yacht in Singapore began circulating widely on social media and television channels.

She stated that it was only after seeing these visuals that the family realised the death was not normal. The videos, she said, raised several serious suspicions about what exactly happened on the day Zubeen Garg entered the sea.

“Only when, after a few days, the yacht videos of Singapore surfaced in social media and television, the family came to know that the death was not normal and several suspicions arised from the visuals,” the post said.

Following this, the family immediately moved to initiate formal legal action by filing a First Information Report (FIR) in Assam.

One of the key points highlighted by Garima Garg is that the Singapore authorities did not wait for a complaint from the family to act. She said the Singapore Police and other authorities initiated proceedings on their own, immediately after the incident.

According to her statement, the Singapore Police commenced an inquiry suo motu, and the Indian High Commission in Singapore played an active role from the beginning. This included coordination on legal and medical processes, as well as the post-mortem examination.

This clarification appears aimed at countering claims or assumptions that no official action was taken in Singapore after the incident.

Garima Garg also stressed that the family placed full faith in the legal systems of both countries. She revealed that although Singapore Police remained in contact with the family, the post-mortem report was not received directly by them.

Instead, the family formally requested that the post-mortem findings be transmitted through the Indian High Commission. This, she said, was done deliberately to ensure that all proceedings remained within a proper sovereign and diplomatic framework between India and Singapore.

The family, she added, avoided sharing or uploading communications with the Singapore Police Force on social media in order to protect the integrity of the investigation and not influence the process.

Once her medical condition allowed, Garima Garg said she and her family lodged an FIR with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Assam. Following this, the Government of Assam constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter.

She confirmed that the SIT chief along with a team of senior police officers travelled to Singapore as part of the investigation. After months of inquiry, the Assam Police filed a charge sheet that runs into more than 2,500 pages.

Significantly, Garima Garg stated that based on the evidence collected during the investigation, sections relating to murder were invoked. This, she said, clearly shows that the matter was treated seriously by the investigating agency in Assam.

Rejecting any suggestion that the family had slowed down or diluted its efforts, Garima Garg said they remained in continuous engagement with authorities in both India and Singapore.

She stated clearly that at no point did the family withdraw, pause, or compromise in its pursuit of the truth. According to her post, they cooperated fully with every agency involved and supplied all information available to them whenever asked.

This cooperation included communication through emails, video conferencing, and even WhatsApp messages, depending on what was required by the authorities at different stages. Family members also attended proceedings whenever they were formally called.

A crucial development highlighted in the post is the family’s participation in the Singapore Coroner’s Court proceedings on January 14, 2026.

Garima Garg said a detailed statement was submitted before the Honourable Coroner by a senior family member, Mr Manoj Kumar Borthakur, who is Zubeen Garg’s uncle. The submission was made with the assistance of two state prosecutors present during the proceedings.

She said the statement placed on record specific and serious factual questions that go to the heart of the incident.

These included questions related to the planning of the outing on the day of the incident, Zubeen Garg’s physical and medical condition at that time, and the safety measures that were in place on the yacht.

The family also sought clarity on the circumstances in which Zubeen Garg entered the sea, the exact words spoken at that moment, and how the people present on the yacht responded when he showed visible distress.

Garima Garg’s post makes a pointed reference to what she describes as “the negligence so clearly visible in the videos circulating in social media all over the world.”

She said these visuals raise unavoidable questions about the conduct of those present, the timing and adequacy of medical assistance, and the overall response to a life-threatening situation.

The family has also questioned the scope and basis of any finding of “no foul play,” stating that such a conclusion cannot be accepted without a full examination of all facts, actions, and omissions.

“These questions arise automatically and they are a family’s right and duty when a life ends suddenly under unclear circumstances,” the post stated.

In a direct appeal, Garima Garg urged the Government of India and the Government of Assam to actively monitor the proceedings in the Singapore Coroner’s Court at the highest level.

She called on both governments to take all necessary diplomatic and legal steps to ensure that every relevant fact is placed before the court in Singapore.

At the same time, she asked for expeditious and effective prosecution in India based on the charge sheet already filed by Assam Police, and stressed that neither jurisdiction should become an excuse for delay or dilution of the case.

Garima Garg stated unequivocally that the family has explored every lawful avenue available to them and will continue to do so.

“There will be no hesitation and no compromise,” she wrote, adding that every step has been taken with diligence, dignity, and faith in the law of the land.

She reminded readers that Zubeen Garg was not just a private individual but a public figure who belonged to Assam, its people, its music, and its emotional memory.

Because of this, she said, the anguish and questions raised by millions of people are understandable and justified.

Seeking full truth, nothing less

The post ends with a clear and firm demand: the family seeks only the complete truth.

Garima Garg said they want every action taken, every word spoken, and every moment lost on that day to be fully and transparently examined. She also demanded that those found guilty be punished to the highest level under the law.

“For that, we will walk every legal path available—solemnly, consistently, and in good faith,” she said.
