The All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) on Wednesday strongly criticised the Congress party over what it described as the poor and disrespectful treatment of minority leaders within the organisation. The sharp reaction came after the exit of minority leader Rezaul Karim Sarkar, which, according to AAMSU, reflects deeper problems within the party.

AAMSU president Imtiaz Hussain said it was “unfortunate and disappointing” that a national party like the Indian National Congress failed to retain a leader who had long represented minority voices in Assam. He said the issue was not just about one individual but about how minority leaders were being treated within the party structure.

Speaking to the media in Guwahati, Hussain openly criticised senior Congress leaders Pradyut Bordoloi and Debabrata Saikia, alleging that remarks made against Rezaul Karim were derogatory and dismissive in nature. He said such comments were unacceptable and sent a wrong message to minority communities.

“The way Rezaul Karim has been treated exposes the Congress party’s internal contradictions when it comes to inclusivity and democratic values,” Hussain said. He added that minority communities were closely observing how political parties respected and protected their own leaders.

The AAMSU president warned that sidelining minority voices could have serious political consequences in Assam, especially at a time when the Congress is trying to strengthen its base and project unity among different social groups. He said trust once broken was difficult to rebuild.

Hussain further said that political parties must go beyond slogans and show genuine respect through their actions. He urged the Congress leadership to introspect and correct its approach if it truly wanted to stand for equality and representation.
