The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has expelled party leader Shahnawaz Ahmed, who was serving as a Joint Secretary of the state unit, from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress. The decision was issued through a formal order dated January 7, 2026.

The expulsion order states that the action was taken as directed by APCC president Gaurav Gogoi. The party said the step became necessary due to what it described as a serious breach of party discipline by Ahmed. The order also mentioned that his actions had allegedly led to political tension among party workers and had damaged the party’s image.

The order, signed by APCC General Secretary (Organisation) Bipul Gogoi, said the conduct of the expelled leader was “grave and unpardonable.” The party leadership stated that the behaviour was not in line with the discipline expected from office-bearers within the organisation.

Earlier, on January 7, the Congress had suspended Shahnawaz Ahmed from all party responsibilities after serious allegations were made against him. The party said he was suspended for what it called “gross party indiscipline” and actions that could damage the party’s public image in Assam.

The suspension order was also issued under the direction of APCC president Gaurav Gogoi, and stated that Ahmed would remain suspended indefinitely pending further action. The party leadership had said that his actions had created political bitterness among party workers, which they viewed as unacceptable.

The suspension came after allegations surfaced that Ahmed was involved in a violent incident in the Nilambazar area of Sribhumi. According to reports, he allegedly attacked Zila Parishad member Zillur Chowdhury with a sharp weapon on Monday night. Chowdhury was reportedly seriously injured and was taken to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where he has been undergoing treatment.
