Two lot mandals (revenue officials) of the Jorhat West Revenue Circle have been suspended from service. The officials, identified as Animesh Saikia and Munindra Borah, have been removed from duty after allegations surfaced that they fraudulently allocated one bigha of government land near the Jorhat bypass.
According to official information, both lot mandals were involved in the alleged land allocation process which concerned government-owned land. The matter reportedly came to light after internal scrutiny and complaint inputs regarding irregularities in land records.
In July last year, for example, two excise officials in Chirang district were suspended after allegations that illegal liquor trade was continuing under their watch. At that time, the suspension was ordered because the department said the officers had failed to prevent unlawful activity that could harm public health and also result in loss of government revenue. The officers were first issued show-cause notices, and when the replies were found unsatisfactory, they were placed under suspension while further proceedings continued.
Similarly, in another case in September last year, two officials of the Silchar Sadar Revenue Circle were suspended after an undercover visit by an IAS probationer reportedly exposed irregular practices inside the office. Citizens had been complaining that extra money was being demanded for normal revenue-related work. The matter came to light after the IAS officer visited the office like a normal applicant and recorded his experience, following which higher authorities took administrative action. That case sparked public debate over transparency and accountability in government offices.
