The death of Tripura student Angel (Anjel) Chakma after an alleged racial assault in Dehradun has drawn strong reactions from the Chief Ministers of Tripura and Meghalaya, who have both called the incident deeply painful and unacceptable.
Angel Chakma, a resident of Nandanagar, Debram Thakur Para in Tripura, was reportedly attacked by a group of miscreants in Dehradun on 9 December. He was later admitted to Graphic Era Hospital, where he passed away. The case has triggered concern across the North East over the safety of students living in other parts of the country.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said he had spoken with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami regarding the case. Dr. Saha stated that five people have already been arrested in connection with the assault, and further investigation is underway. He added that the Uttarakhand Chief Minister has assured him that justice will be delivered.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed shock over the incident. In a social media post, he said that Angel Chakma lost his life after facing “brutal racial abuse” in Dehradun. He described the case as heartbreaking and said racial violence must never be tolerated in the country.
Sangma said people from the North East are equal citizens of India and deserve dignity and respect everywhere. He stressed that racism should never be normalised and that those responsible must be punished as per law. He also conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family.
