Christmas was celebrated with devotion and joy across Meghalaya as thousands of people attended midnight services in churches and took part in carol processions through brightly lit streets. From Shillong to smaller towns and villages, churches were decorated with lights, stars and cribs, as believers gathered to mark the birth of Jesus Christ.
In Shillong, people began arriving at churches well before midnight. Families, elderly people, youth and children all came together to join the special Christmas prayers. Hymns, readings from the Bible and messages of peace formed the main part of the services. Many churches were full to capacity, and additional seating was arranged to accommodate worshippers.
At the Catholic Cathedral in Shillong, the Midnight Mass was led by Bishop Victor. Addressing the congregation, he said the birth of Jesus Christ symbolises the triumph of light over darkness. He urged the people to remember the message of hope, peace and love that Christmas brings. He also encouraged everyone to show kindness and compassion in their daily lives, especially towards those who are suffering or in need.
Carol singing formed another major highlight of the celebrations. Groups of singers moved through various localities, carrying candles and lanterns while singing traditional Christmas songs. The illuminated streets and decorated homes added to the festive mood. Many residents came out to listen, join the singing or simply enjoy the warm and peaceful atmosphere.
Shops and markets had earlier seen brisk activity as people prepared for the festival. Homes were cleaned and decorated, and special food items were prepared. Cakes, pastries and traditional dishes were shared among family members, neighbours and friends. Many people also exchanged small gifts as a sign of goodwill.
Security arrangements were in place in different parts of the state to ensure peaceful celebrations. Traffic arrangements were also made near major churches to manage the large number of visitors. The celebrations were largely peaceful and orderly, with people cooperating with authorities and volunteers.
In many churches, the Christmas message focused on unity and harmony. Church leaders reminded the people that Christmas is not only about celebrations, but also about reflection. They stressed the importance of forgiveness, understanding and peaceful coexistence among communities. Several churches also prayed for the well-being of the state and the country.
