The district administration in Hojai has ordered a 54-year-old man to leave Assam within 24 hours after he was declared a foreigner by the Foreigners’ Tribunal, while a separate incident in Sribhumi has raised fresh concerns over border security following the detention of a suspected Bangladeshi national.

According to official sources, Abdul Majid, a resident of Borjari Maj Gaon under Jamunamukh police station, was directed to leave the state under the provisions of the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950. The order was issued after the tribunal declared him a foreigner in a case that had been pending since 2017. Officials said Majid had earlier approached the Guwahati High Court and later the Supreme Court, but did not receive any relief.

Following the tribunal’s verdict and a report submitted by the Senior Superintendent of Police, the district administration took the final decision to expel him. The order clearly states that failure to comply within the given time will invite strict legal action.

Meanwhile, Majid’s family has opposed the move. His wife has appealed to the state government to review the decision, claiming that his documents are valid and requesting that he be allowed to stay on humanitarian grounds.

In a separate incident , local residents in Sribhumi apprehended a 35-year-old man who was allegedly moving suspiciously along Gach Kalibari Road. Locals claimed that Bangladeshi currency was recovered from him and that he admitted to being a citizen of Bangladesh. He was later handed over to the police.
