Seven wild elephants were killed after a speeding Rajdhani Express train hit a herd on the Jamunamukh–Kampur railway section in Assam. The accident occurred around 2:17 am, causing the derailment of the locomotive and five coaches of Train No. 20507 Sairang–New Delhi Rajdhani Express. Railway officials confirmed that no passengers were injured.

The incident site falls under Lumding Division of the Northeast Frontier Railway (N.F. Railway) and is about 126 kilometres from Guwahati. According to reports, the herd of elephants was crossing the track when the train approached. The loco pilot reportedly applied emergency brakes after spotting the animals. Despite this action, the train could not come to a halt in time. The elephants collided with the front portion of the locomotive resulting in their death on the spot.

N.F. Railway authorities issued a bulletin early in the morning confirming the derailment. Senior officers, including the General Manager of the zone and the Divisional Railway Manager of Lumding Division, rushed to the location soon after receiving information. Accident Relief Trains and technical teams from the divisional headquarters were deployed immediately to begin rescue and restoration work.

The damaged coaches were detached and the remaining part of the train left the site for Guwahati at 6:11 am. Once the train reaches Guwahati station, additional coaches will be attached so passengers can continue their onward journey to New Delhi.

A statement issued by Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of N.F. Railway, said restoration efforts were underway. Trains scheduled to pass through the down line in the Jamunamukh–Kampur section are currently being diverted through the up line to maintain movement on the route. The section remains closed for emergency track repair until the derailed coaches are cleared and the track is examined for safety.

The Rajdhani Express was travelling from Sairang in Mizoram to New Delhi. Traffic between Lumding and Guwahati is expected to remain affected until restoration work is complete.
