The political war of words in Assam sharpened on Tuesday after Assam Congress president and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi launched a strong attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his statements related to Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh and the alleged links to Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth Gogoi.

Reacting to the Chief Minister’s remarks, Gogoi accused Himanta Biswa Sarma of repeatedly making allegations without producing any evidence. He said the Chief Minister was acting out of fear and political insecurity, claiming that Sarma knew public anger was growing against his government across the state.

“The Chief Minister of Assam is scared. He knows that he is not returning to power. He knows that he will have to face the questions of the public,” Gogoi said. He added that the Chief Minister appeared to be on the back foot and had become defensive, raising the same issues again and again while failing to place any proof before the people.

Gogoi further alleged that discussions about corruption linked to the present government were taking place in households across Assam. According to him, the Chief Minister’s repeated statements were aimed at diverting attention from these issues rather than addressing public concerns.

“He knows that his corruption is being talked about in every house of Assam,” Gogoi said, adding that such tactics would not shield the Chief Minister from accountability.

The Assam Congress chief also said that the Chief Minister would eventually have to answer both legally and politically. He stated that justice would not be limited to legal proceedings alone but would also come through public judgment. “Sooner or later, he will have to face justice not only in the court but also in the court of public opinion,” Gogoi said.
