The district administration of East Jaintia Hills has confirmed that all unauthorised coke plants operating in the district have now been demolished, following clear directions issued by the Hon’ble High Court of Meghalaya.
Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills, Shivansh Awasthi, said the demolition drive was carried out by a joint team formed specifically to implement the court’s order. The team was supervised by Sub-Divisional Officer Manish Kumar and included officials from the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) and the district Police Department.
According to the district administration, a total of 16 coke plants were earlier identified as operating without the mandatory government approvals and environmental clearances. Of these, five plants had already been demolished during earlier enforcement actions. The remaining 11 plants were issued formal notices in October 2025, asking their owners to submit documents proving compliance with existing rules and regulations. However, no response was received from the plant owners within the given time.
Following this, the joint team proceeded with the demolition as per court instructions. Seven of the remaining plants were dismantled directly by the administration. During field inspections, officials found that the owners of four plants had already dismantled their units on their own. With this, all 11 unauthorised coke plants have now been shut down.
