The All Tai Ahom Students Union today organised a deliberation meeting in Guwahati to discuss the recent report submitted by the Group of Ministers of the Assam Government on granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities of the state. The meeting was held at a hotel in the city and was attended by several well-known members from the Tai Ahom community.

During the meeting, participants discussed different points related to the ministerial report and shared their views on the recommendations made in it. The representatives said that the community needs a careful examination of the report, as the decision may have a long-term effect on the social and political rights of future generations.

After the discussions, All Tai Ahom Students Union leader Basanta Gogoi spoke to reporters and said that the report placed by the Group of Ministers has mentioned the Tai Ahom community in the category of ST (V). He said this point needs to be studied properly before drawing any conclusion.

Gogoi also informed that a 21-member high-level committee has been formed to study the matter. The committee will be led by former Advocate General of Assam, Ramesh Borparta Gohain. The committee will examine how the community’s rights, identity, and social security can be protected if the recommendations are implemented in the present form.

According to Gogoi, the newly formed committee will also review whether the expectations of the younger generation of the community would be addressed. He said the association considers this matter important for the future of the community and therefore wants a detailed review before taking further steps.
