The recent wave of IndiGo flight cancellations across the country has created concern among air travellers and triggered debates inside Parliament. On Monday, Assam Congress president and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi questioned the Union Government’s response and said that the explanation given in Parliament was not satisfactory.

Speaking in Delhi, Gogoi said that the government had made statements in both Houses over the past two days but placed the responsibility only on the private airline. According to Gogoi, this does not answer the questions of the public or Parliament. He said, “The government has given statements in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha for two days. According to the government, the entire responsibility is of the owner of a private company. But we want to know more.”

He added that MPs from the Opposition were not satisfied with the Civil Aviation Minister’s reply in the Lok Sabha, after which they staged a walkout. Gogoi said that more detailed discussion was needed because thousands of passengers had been affected during a busy travel season.

Passengers in cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Guwahati, Bengaluru and Kolkata reported delays, long waiting periods and problems with rebooking. Gogoi said that a matter affecting so many citizens should not be handled with only a short statement. “We demand that a discussion be held on this,” he said.

Opposition MPs also raised questions about whether the cancellations were caused by shortage of aircraft, maintenance issues or shortage of crew. They also asked whether aviation monitoring systems were strong enough to prevent such large disruptions.
