The Kuki-Zo Council has issued a strong statement against the visit made by Meitei MLA and former Manipur Assembly Speaker Yumnam Khemchand Singh to an internally displaced persons (IDP) relief camp at Litan Sareikhong in Ukhrul district on Monday.
In a press note released by the Council, it was stated that the MLA reached the camp without informing Kuki-Zo leaders, camp officials or even the district administration. The statement added that the MLA had been visiting BJP workers in another area and decided to stop at the camp on his return journey. Later, photographs and videos of the visit were shared online, showing the MLA interacting with displaced families.
The Council questioned the motive of the visit and demanded to know why the MLA could not speak up when violence began in May 2023. It recalled that many Kuki-Zo families living in and around Imphal had been forced to flee during the early days of the unrest, and said that the MLA had not raised his voice during that period. The Council noted that the trust between the communities had suffered serious damage during the conflict and expressed concern that a short visit would not bring any real change in the situation.
The statement also pointed out that Meiteis have been travelling to Ukhrul and other Naga-dominated areas even during the ongoing crisis, and therefore the visit could not be treated as any major achievement. The Council further argued that such sudden stops could create confusion at a time when the atmosphere on the ground is still tense.
The Kuki-Zo Council appealed to all political figures and individuals to communicate with community authorities before visiting relief camps, especially when displaced families are still living in difficult situations. According to the statement, visits without coordination could lead to misunderstanding or even provoke unwanted incidents. The Council also rejected any attempt to use the suffering of displaced families to gain political mileage or public praise on social media.
