The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Tuesday ordered a five per cent reduction in the flight schedules of IndiGo, after the airline continued to face large-scale disruptions for more than a week. The reduction will apply across various routes, including busy and high-demand sectors, the aviation regulator said.

The disruptions have been affecting passengers since December 1. Many passengers have complained of long waiting hours, missing baggage and sudden cancellations. The DGCA reviewed the situation over the past few days and later decided to cut the flight schedule in order to reduce traffic pressure and allow the airline to handle operations more smoothly.

Officials said that IndiGo must now submit a revised schedule by 5 pm on Wednesday. The regulator is also looking at individual routes where flight cancellations have been reported frequently over the past week. The DGCA has been monitoring these routes closely, the officials added.

The flight reduction is expected to affect several high-frequency sectors such as Delhi-Mumbai and Mumbai-Bengaluru, though exact details are still awaited. The regulator has also asked the airline to make sure that passengers are informed about cancellations and delays in advance, rather than only at the airport.

The DGCA has already asked for reports from IndiGo regarding the reasons behind the ongoing disruption. The regulator may look at further action depending on the airline’s response. Passengers, meanwhile, continue to face delays and uncertainty as the situation remains unsettled even after several days.
