Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the investigation into the death of popular singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg has been completed by the Special Investigation Team. The Chief Minister said that the SIT has prepared a long report of almost 3,500 pages and the formal chargesheet in the case will be submitted in court in the coming days.

The Chief Minister was speaking to the media in Dima Hasao district on Friday, during the inauguration of the ACA stadium. He said that the state expects the chargesheet to be filed between December 6 and December 12. He also said that the government has discussed the matter with the Advocate General to make sure the procedures are completed in time.

Sarma explained that the investigation has reached a stage where the accused must face formal charges in court. He also said that the legal team has been instructed to complete all steps properly so that there is no delay. According to him, if the chargesheet is not filed by December 18, then those who are under judicial custody may get a chance to apply for default bail by using legal provisions.

While talking to reporters, the Chief Minister again said that the government has treated the case as a murder case right from the beginning. He mentioned that within the first few days of the SIT probe, the government had already announced that the incident was a planned act and not an accident.

Earlier, during the ongoing Assam Assembly session on November 25, Sarma had informed the House that all the accused have been charged under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. These include criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and causing death by negligence. The government has also requested the Gauhati High Court to allow adding the specific murder provision under Section 103, which is similar to the old IPC Section 302.

Sarma also told the Assembly that without the murder section, there is a possibility that the accused persons might get relief through bail. He also said that the investigation has shown that the act was done intentionally and with the involvement of more than one person.

The Chief Minister praised the SIT for its detailed work and said that the investigation has found facts that were not known before. He also said that the report explains how the crime happened and who was involved at different levels. According to him, one person carried out the main act, while others helped and supported it in different ways.

He said that even after the chargesheet is filed, the investigation will not stop. The SIT will continue collecting evidence and will work to make sure that every person connected to the case faces the law. He added that the final decision will be taken by the court, but the government will continue the investigation until all details are fully verified.
