Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan has written a detailed letter to Assam Governor and Tezpur University Chancellor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, urging him to take immediate steps to bring the situation at Tezpur University under control. The university has been going through a long spell of unrest, with students holding continuous dharnas and protests over what they describe as corruption, financial mismanagement, and serious administrative lapses.

Tezpur University, which was set up in 1994 under an act of Parliament and is considered one of the major achievements of the Assam Accord, has come to a complete standstill in recent days. Since November 29, all classes and academic activities have stopped indefinitely because of the growing agitation. Students have been demanding accountability from the administration, saying that the problems have been ignored for too long.

In his letter, MP Bhuyan expressed deep concern that the Vice Chancellor has reportedly been away from the campus for nearly two months. He said this long absence has raised important questions about responsibility, especially when the university is facing so many problems. He wrote that the Vice Chancellor “cannot escape responsibility simply by remaining away from the university,” and warned that the image of a central university should not be damaged at a time when students expect stability and guidance from the administration.

Bhuyan also urged the state government to be careful while making appointments to top academic positions. He said that political or external considerations should not influence the selection of Vice Chancellors. He further mentioned that any attempt to appoint a Pro Vice Chancellor just to cover up the failures of the current administration would only deepen the crisis. According to him, the dignity of Tezpur University must always come first.
