All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) President Utpal Sarma speaking bout the special revision of the voter list in Assam said that the state has been facing the same problem for many decades. Speaking at a public meeting in Kaliabor, he said that from the days of the Assam Movement till today, elections in Assam have been held with an incorrect voter list, and this has created many long-term concerns.
Sarma said that the main issue is the presence of names of people who should not be listed as voters. He said that unless a correct voter list is prepared on the basis of a proper National Register of Citizens (NRC) that clearly removes the names of foreigners, the problem will not be solved. He added that illegal Bangladeshis continue to remain in the voter list because the basic process of verification has not been carried out in a proper and scientific manner.
While addressing the gathering, Utpal Sharma also reacted sharply to a recent comment made by an election official regarding the voter list. He said that the statement was very insensitive and completely unacceptable. According to him, officers in charge of such an important responsibility should speak carefully and understand the seriousness of the issue.
The AASU President further alleged that a new trend of creating “mobile voters” has begun in the state. He claimed that this process could affect the fairness of elections and may create confusion among people about who is eligible to vote in a particular area. Sharma said that such practices weaken trust in the system and must be stopped immediately.
He said that the voter list is directly linked to the rights of the people of Assam. He said that the people of the state have always demanded a clean and correct voter list, and that this demand should be respected. He urged the authorities to take the revision process seriously and ensure transparency.
Sarma also said that AASU has always stood for the protection of Assamese identity, culture, and political rights. He said that the union will continue to raise these issues whenever needed. He also appealed to the public to remain alert and aware of the situation so that no one can misuse the voter list for personal or political benefit.
