MP Gogoi blasts neglect of NH-37, demands six-month deadline enforcement

MP Gaurav Gogoi flags poor condition of NH-37, demands urgent repair MP Gaurav Gogoi flags poor condition of NH-37, demands urgent repair

MP Gaurav Gogoi has once again drawn attention to the worrying condition of National Highway 37, especially the stretch between Jorhat and Dibrugarh. This road is one of the most important routes in Upper Assam, but people who use it daily say it has become unsafe and difficult to travel.

Shri Gogoi referred to a recent viral video in which Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari was seen driving at 140 km per hour on a smooth national highway. He said that people in Assam “cannot help but feel jealous” when they see such good roads in other parts of the country while their own highways remain among the worst. He added that people pay high toll fees, yet the Jorhat–Dibrugarh section of NH-37 continues to stay uneven, damaged, and poorly maintained.

The MP reminded the House that he had raised this issue in the previous Parliament session as well. He said that after he mentioned Janji, some small repair work began there. But he pointed out that the long-route areas in Demow and Moran are still in very bad shape. Large potholes, broken stretches, and waterlogging have made the road risky, especially during the monsoon months. He said that drivers and passengers face constant trouble as they never know what lies ahead on the damaged road.

Gogoi urged the Minister to take strict and quick action. He asked him to direct NHIDCL to step in immediately and make sure proper repair work is done. He stressed that there should be accountability and that quality should not be compromised anymore.

Responding in the House, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said he understood the concerns. He admitted that NHIDCL has faced problems in completing work on time and maintaining quality in the region. He also said that heavy rainfall this year has made the condition of the road worse. The Minister informed Parliament that an inquiry has been started against the contractor after the issue was reported. He assured the MP that full repair work on the Jorhat–Dibrugarh stretch would be completed within the next six months.
