At a meeting of the Welfare Association of Surrendered NDFB members held at the IT Park in Barama on Monday, BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary said that the violence at the BTC Secretariat was carried out by members of ABSU and the UPPL. He added that a full investigation into the incident will definitely take place.

Mohilary said he had “no doubt” about who was behind the unrest. He argued that ABSU and UPPL leaders were denying their role only to mislead people. “They say they did not do it, but in reality they did. If they had said they did it, then maybe I would have thought they did not. This is the situation now,” he said.

Mohilary directly named Dipen Boro, saying he now holds all major positions in both organisations. According to him, Pramod Boro has stepped aside and asked Dipen Boro to handle the affairs of ABSU and UPPL. “He is ABSU president, UPPL president, advisor… everything,” Mohilary said, criticising what he called the centralisation of leadership.

He also said he does not trust the present leadership of ABSU. “If you ask any ABSU leader whether they had breakfast or lunch, and if he says he ate, that means he ate. If he says he did not eat, he also ate. Like this, I do not believe their statements,” he said, adding that their claims about the BTC violence did not convince him.

During the meeting, Mohilary also raised questions about the attack that took place with the ABSU flag at the BTC Secretariat. “Who attacked with the ABSU flag? Everybody saw it,” he said, adding that these actions cannot be hidden and must be examined through a proper inquiry.

He further commented on the debate surrounding Scheduled Tribe status. He said ABSU has no hidden agenda regarding ST status and that their objections were directed only at the previous BPF government, not at the issue of ST itself. The BPF, during the meeting, clarified its own stance on the demand for ST status by the Koch Rajbongshi and Adivasi communities. According to Mohilary, these communities have their own culture and ethnicity, and will naturally continue to demand recognition.

He also questioned why the Koch Rajbongshi community should be divided into two groups. “If the government wants to give ST status, it should give it to the community as one single group. Why should the Koch Rajbongshi people be split?” Mohilary asked.

Mohilary said he attended the meeting because many surrendered cadres were present and they had raised several concerns. He added that whatever problems these cadres share with him will be communicated to the Assam government. “They have surrendered, and that is a good thing. Whatever they received and did not receive, if they inform me, I will take the message to the government,” he said.
