A sharp and tense exchange took place in the Assam Legislative Assembly today as Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi questioned the state government over the allotment of government land for building BJP party offices across Assam. The discussion, which quickly grew heated, ended with Gogoi being suspended from the House for the day after he repeatedly demanded clear answers from the government.
Akhil Gogoi began by asking how much government land the BJP had taken for its office construction and why lands like PGR and VGR, which are traditionally meant for community use and public activities, were being diverted for political party infrastructure. He also asked why four bighas of government land were allotted for the BJP’s office at Basistha. Gogoi told the House that he received a six-page reply from the government but argued that the reply did not show the full picture. According to him, the government was “hiding the scale of land diversion” even as nearly six lakh people in Assam continue to live on mithaouri land without land titles.
Before his suspension, Gogoi also remarked that the Speaker of the Assembly must remain neutral and hinted that the chair was not maintaining impartiality during the heated exchange. His comments led to further uproar in the House.
Responding to Gogoi’s questions, Cabinet Minister Keshab Mahanta placed a detailed written statement in the Assembly. Mahanta stated that 34 government land plots have been allotted for the construction of BJP party offices in different districts of Assam. Out of these, 29 allotments took place during Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s tenure, while five were made earlier under former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
Mahanta said the allotments were made district-wise and follow official processes, though the issue continued to draw loud reactions from the opposition benches. The revelation added fuel to the already intense exchange between Mahanta and Akhil Gogoi, marking yet another politically charged day in the Assam Assembly.
